In the autumn of 2023, Marianne and Brett of Underhill, Vermont wanted to learn more about weatherizing their home and finding a more efficient solution for heating and cooling.  Solar and heat pumps were top of mind. They found Building Energy using Efficiency Vermont’s website. Marianne and Brett appreciated Building Energy’s long-standing membership with Efficiency Vermont’s Efficiency Excellence Network, our wide range of services, and the many positive reviews from satisfied customers. After connecting with Building Energy, they learned that Energy Audits are a great first step to assess a home’s energy consumption and determine which measures would best help to make a home more energy efficient.

The energy audit was carried out by Jacob Smeriglio-BPI Certified, Senior Auditor at Building Energy. Jacob’s comprehensive energy audit report mapped out a plan to achieve improved energy efficiency through weatherization.

Marianne and Brett, however, prioritized the installation of cold climate heat pumps and incorporating renewable energy.  First up, our skilled heat pump installation team successfully completed a turn-key project. We installed a Mitsubishi multi-zone cold climate heat pump system with 3 indoor units in their bedrooms complimenting their baseboard heating and pellet stove in the main living area.

While Marianne and Brett were eager to incorporate renewable energy into their home upgrade plans, their roof was not suitable for solar panels. A plan to build a carport to support a solar power system as well as accommodate their electric vehicles charging stations was designed. With both a full-service construction division and an in-house solar installation division, it was an obvious choice to hire Building Energy for the carport construction and solar installation. Bryan Bergeron, Senior Construction Manager, managed the construction of the carport.  Nik Ponzio, Senior Solar Engineer, managed the solar project and work with Marianne and Brett to incorporate a large-capacity battery backup system. Now the home is powered by solar and will never have to fear a power outage in Underhill!

Next on the agenda is weatherizing the basement and attic space as recommended in the Energy Audit Report.

Marianne and Brett say, when asked about doing business with Building Energy: “They all did quality work, they were great at communicating their schedules and what they were doing. Most importantly, I felt very comfortable with them in my home. They all seemed like genuinely good people.”
